Horse Trailers

If you`re a seasoned equestrian you probably know the difference between a horse trailer and a horsebox. Deciding between the two really depends on personal preference and some are good for specific reasons over the other. Let`s look at some of the differences and why you might want a horse trailer rather than a horsebox.

What`s the difference?
Essentially, a horsebox is a lorry or a truck. It means the area where the horse is in, is the same vehicle as what you`re driving up front. These are very popular nowadays because if it`s a 3.5 tonne you don`t need to take an additional driving test to be authorized to drive them, making them a great option for people who want to transport their horse but at minimal hassle.

A horse trailer, on the other hand, is exactly what it sounds like. A trailer that attaches to your car or truck, meaning they`re two very separate vehicles and the trailer itself has no ability to move on its own, and therefore needs to be attached to the car or van or truck to be moved.

So why would you want a trailer over a horsebox? Well, it would depend on many reasons, but here are a couple reasons why you might favour a trailer over a horsebox.

They`re More Adaptable
Ultimately, a trailer is more adaptable because you can attach it to any car. If a horsebox breaks down, then you just have to wait and get it fixed. However, if you have a trailer and you potentially have two cars, vans or trucks that can tow it, you can simply use the other one to take it. This means if you run into any catastrophes where you need to be somewhere, you always have a second option if you can`t get it fixed in time.

They Can Be Cheaper To Insure
This isn`t always the case, but often trailers are cheaper to ensure and so they`re great options for people who don`t want to spend more money than necessary. Although you will probably need to take an additional test to get the right license in order to drive it, you`ll save money in the long run through your insurance policies.

They Can Be Cheaper To Maintain
Because these trailers aren`t vehicles in their own right, they`re usually cheaper to maintain because fewer things can go wrong. Whereas your horsebox could have an engine failure or plumbing problems, etc., a trailer wouldn`t have those problems because it doesn`t have those features.

When it comes to choosing a horse trailer versus a horsebox, it really depends on your budget and your personal preferences. Horse trailers can be excellent options and hopefully these few tips helped you figure out if it was right for you.
